COLUMBUS (OH) ALUMNAE CHAPTER
The Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was established on May 20,
1934. This was the 66th chapter of the Sorority and was initially called the Alpha Beta Sigma
Chapter. The chapter was chartered by 23 dedicated and dynamic sorors who continued the
legacy of sisterhood, scholarship, and service as set forth by the Founders of the organization.
The status of Honorary Charter member was given to Soror Edith Cousins on March 11, 1979
for being a devoted member of the chapter and the Columbus community. This was the first
such distinction given to any chapter in the Sorority.
The Columbus Alumnae Chapter is devoted to serving the needs of the community at large. The
various chapter projects and programs are designed to address the needs of a wide range of
community residents. Some of the chapter projects include providing scholarships to
graduating seniors in the Columbus area, mentoring pre-teen and teenage girls through our
Delta Academy and Delta GEMS programs, tutoring at Central Community House, and
participating in annual community walk-a-thons, .
The chapter has collaborated with other organizations on specific concerns that impact the
African-American community, such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the American Heart
Association, Habitat for Humanity and the Diabetes Association. As part of the Political
Awareness and Involvement area of our National Five Point Thrust, the chapter participates in
the annual Delta Days at the State Capitol, where Sorors from around the state of Ohio meet
with legislators to discuss issues, which affect the lives of Ohioans.
